2010 SUSTAINABILITY REPORT  …

Globally the cement industry has chosen to adopt an agenda for sustainable development for three reasons: to prepare for a more sustainable future; to meet the expectations of stakeholders; and to individually identify and capitalize on new market opportunities.

As part of promoting a sustainable development  agenda, the Cement Association of Canada has released the industry’s second sustainability report.

Download 26 pages, 3.57 MB .pdf file

The report focuses on cement manufacturing and includes performance information from Canadian manufacturers. Themes included in this report were inspired by the World Business Council on Sustainable Development’s (WBCSD) Cement Sustainability Initiative, and reflect key topics of interest in the Canadian context.

The report provides information on environmental, social and economic performance and key sustainability initiatives and achievements of member companies. The Cement Association of Canada intends to publish a sustainability report every two years to enable interested parties to monitor our progress in these important areas.

Lehigh Cement is a member of the Cement Association of Canada. Our parent company HeidelbergCement is a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, and a participant in the Cement Sustainability Initiative; a voluntary program. Lehigh Northwest Cement is committed to sustainable value creation and balance between ecology, economy and social responsibility.

Sustainable Development and Concrete

Concrete has many sustainable benefits. When considering the cradle-to-cradle impact of a building material - extraction, processing, construction, operation, demolition and recycling - concrete makes a significant contribution to the triple bottom line of sustainable development.

Well designed concrete projects contribute to social progress, economic growth and environmental protection for years to come.
