Concrete Paving - Intersections

Intersections are one of the most severely stressed sections of the roadway. Due to the traffic stopping, starting and turning the loads applied to the road surface are much greater than that of the straight sections of the road. As a result, intersections constructed from asphalt can end up rutted with deep grooves in the pavement. These grooves trap water during rainstorms and create a hazard for the traffic that is trying to stop or turn.

Concrete is a rigid paving material and stays flat for the life of the intersection. Flat surfaces that allow the water to drain away provide shorter stopping distances and safer intersections.

Concrete pavements provide a higher degree of reflectivity than dark asphalt pavements. The improved visibility offers better night time vision for drivers as they enter this high hazard zone.
